A book you MUST read! Beautiful World Where Are You - Sally Rooney

Writer: AliAli

I read this book earlier in the year and absolutely loved it! It was my first Sally Rooney book but I've since read Normal People too which is a topic for another day... Anyways, I'll give you a quick rundown of what this excellent book is about.

Alice meets a guy called Felix and asks him to go on holiday to Rome. Back in Dublin, her best friend Eileen is getting over a breakup and starts flirting with her childhood friend Simon again. Juicy. They're all young but life is beginning to catch up with them. They love each other, they hate each other they worry about sex and the world around them. Will they find a way to believe in a beautiful world?

Ok first things first, can we appreciate this cover? I believe the paperback has the same cover but I just love it. I don't think Sally Rooney's writing style is for everyone. She doesn't use quotation marks which can make it a bit difficult to figure out whos talking, but you do get used to it. It did mean I had to re-read some lines to figure out who was talking though. This really is, however, quite an intellectual book. It's one of those reads that makes you reflect on yourself and your own life, so if you're not into that then I'd say skip this one. If you are into it then I think you'll love this.

Rooney really captures emotions so well. You can place yourself into these characters so easily because of that. BWWAY covers topics such as climate, religion and struggling with your own beliefs. Really, all of these characters seem to be having a bit of a quarter-life crisis, but they navigate through it as every normal person does. There's no sugar coating in this book. It all feels real and raw.

So what are my overall thoughts? Well, I think this book is phenomenal and a must-read. Especially even if you yourself are trying to figure out what to do with your life, I feel like it gives a bit of perspective. I gave this a 5-star rating and I'd love to read it again at some point!
